By Staff Report-

Libertarians of Kosciusko County and Indiana’s District 2 volunteered to clean up a local highway for the third consecutive year near Warsaw Sunday in recognition of National Liberty Day of Service.

The LPKC coordinated their event with district members and picked up trash at the Chinworth Bridge Trailhead and other areas nearby along areas of Lincoln Highway outside of town, according to a news release from the political party.

Participants said they were happy to help the local community again this year, and believe volunteering is a vital trait for those involved in the liberty movement.

“Volunteerism is the basis for Libertarianism. We believe in a voluntary society,” said Libertarian Party of Indiana 2nd District Representative and Elkhart County Chair Elizabeth Coquillard.

Coquillard went on to explain how people and organizations work together independently, outside of government, to solve issues.

“If there weren’t a government program in place, the work still would need to be done. And it would be done more efficiently, and more effectively voluntarily, on an individual level; on a community level,” she said.

Libertarians believe protecting the health of the environment is important, and volunteering is the best way as concerned citizens can positively affect the community.

“It’s a chance to go out and do just something nice for the community at a very basic level,” said Josh Vergiels, a Kosciusko County member. “It makes our community look a little bit more vibrant, a little bit nicer, and it’s also a good chance to be a good steward of the world we all share.”

“Volunteerism doesn’t have to be anything extravagant,” said Cassie Rolon, Kosciusko County chair, who helped plan for this event and past years. She stressed how simple it is to plan a group activity and have success.

“It could be something as small as helping out at your local shelter, donating food at your local food pantry, helping out at a pet shelter or even just picking trash up on the side of the road,” she said.
