Warsaw School Board Hears Of Security Program

Tracy Horrell, assistant superintendent of secondary education, said Raptor Alert is a basic notification program through Raptor, which allows staff members to be notified if something is going on in the school.
Kyle Carter, chief technology and data analytics officer, said the program is a communication tool that allows staff members to be notified if there is an emergency in the school. Staff members have a way to trigger alerts to notify others. School resource officers will also be tied to the program so they are notified and emergency responders will be notified right away.
Carter said the software does have a live chat option in case staff members have to check where students are or other factors. The software also has the ability to share locations if needed as well.
The program would be used to reunite students with their parents in an emergency, Carter said. Every single staff member has access to it, and Horrell said all teachers have it on their iPad or phone.
Horrell said teachers have already done drills using the program.
Earlier in the meeting, the school board was updated on Jefferson Elementary’s student-run coffee shop, Happy Beans. Superintendent Dr. David Hoffert said Happy Beans is Warsaw Community School’s first coffee shop.
Rachel Jensen, special education teacher at Jefferson, said the idea came from an article of another school district doing the same thing.
Happy Beans is open every Friday from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. inside the front doors at Jefferson Elementary. All of the supplies for the initial startup were donated by community donors, Jensen said.
Currently, coffee and hot chocolate are sold for $1.25, but Jensen is working on a collaborative project with Jefferson’s functional skills class that will soon result in baked goods being sold, according to a news release from WCS.
With the funds they raise each week, Happy Beans gives back by supporting a kindness project within the building. The coffee shop has earned $620.47 and been able to give away a total of $150 to three individuals, stated the release.
Monday, Jensen said she thinks it’s a unique way to learn and she’d love to make it a bigger thing, as well as more of a part of her curriculum.
In other business, the board heard:
• Warsaw Community High School is on track to have a 95% graduation rate this year.
• Deputy Superintendent Dr. Dani Barkey updated the board on some academic metrics for kindergarten through third-graders for reading.
She said the below-average percentage for the third quarter is going down as compared to the second quarter.
