James H. Garrett, 80, passed away on March 15, 2023, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

He was born in Richmond to the late Arthur and Leola Grubb Garrett on Jan. 3, 1943.

Jim came to Marion with his parents and attended Marion Community Schools. He was a 1961 graduate of Marion High School. On Dec. 27, 1961, he enlisted in the United State Air Force. He was trained as an aeromedical specialist and honorably served until his discharge on Dec. 23, 1965. He returned to Marion and then moved to Chicago where he began his sales career.

On Dec. 12, 1970, he married Kathie L. Burch. Mrs. Garrett survives in their Marion home. The couple made Florida their home over 20 years and then moved back to Indiana. Everywhere their travels took them they made many lifelong friends. Jim and Kathie returned to Marion and Jim retired in 2017 after a successful career as a real estate broker. In his free time, Jim enjoyed playing golf, fly fishing, socializing and he was a veracious reader of fiction mystery novels and true crime. He was a member of the American Legion Post 10, Post 253 and Post 368, the Marion Aero Club and the Marion Elks Lodge 195.

Jim is survived by his wife, Kathie L. (Burch) Garrett, Marion; children, Donovan A. (Jennifer) Garrett, Indianapolis; Melissa A. (Stephen) Roesly, Marion; siblings, Arthur G. Garrett, Panama City, Fla.; George V. (Anne) Garrett, Indianapolis; Faye Joyce and Patsy (Keith) Fields, both of Marion; Sharon (Jack) Daniel, Plainfield; Wanda (Kenny) Thompson, DeLand, Fla.; Marcia Collins, Schererville; grandson, Maxwell James Garrett; four step-grandchildren: Stephen Roesly III, Jenna Roesly, Harrision Roesly and Liv Roesly.

In keeping with Jim's wishes, there will be a private celebration of life service and entombment in Marion National Cemetery. Owen-Weilert-Duncan Funeral Home, Marion Chapel, 2722 S. Washington St., Marion, was entrusted with the arrangements. Jim was an advocate for organ donation and his generosity was carried out through Indiana Donor Network. Because of his selfless gift, there was life-saving help for others in need.

In lieu of flowers, please direct memorial contributions to Indiana Donor Network at donatelifeindiana.org. Jim and his family also had a special fondness for animals and animal rescue. Contributions may also be made to Grant County Humane Society, 505 South Miller Avenue, Marion, IN 46953.
