Charles F. Hartman, formerly of Warsaw, passed away at 6 a.m. on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Peabody Retirement Community in North Manchester, at the age of 84.

He was born on Sept. 3, 1938, in Warsaw, to Charlene Arnsberger Hartman and Frederick Charles Hartman.  Charles enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on Sept. 19, 1961, and proudly served until his honorable discharge on Sept. 7, 1965.

He graduated from Ferris State University. Charles lived in Homewood, Ill., for 20 years where he worked as an auxiliary police officer before retiring and moving back to Warsaw. He served as past commander of the American Legion Post #49 in Warsaw where he was a member.  Charles enjoyed the simple things in life - a good meal, watching I.U. basketball, fishing and he especially loved spending time with his family.

He leaves behind his son, Jeffrey Hartman, Seattle, Wash.; daughter, Amy (Jeff) Piunti, St. John; and five grandchildren: Giovanni Keels, Brianna Hartman, Jaylen Hartman, Dominic Piunti and Nicholas Piunti. Also surviving is his brother, John Hartman, Bloomington; sister, Mary Beth (Dr. Tom) Hollingsworth, Bloomington; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Gretchen Hartman.

Charles’ life will be celebrated with a private family graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery in Warsaw with military rites conducted by members of the American Legion Post #49, V.F.W. #1126, both of Warsaw, and active-duty members of the Air Force Honor Guard. Arrangements were entrusted to Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw.

Memorial donations may be directed to American Legion Post #49, 301 N. Buffalo St.,  Warsaw, IN 46580; or to Heart to Heart Hospice, 5646 Coventry Lane, Fort Wayne, IN 47804.

Online condolences may be sent through the funeral home’s website at www.redpathfruthfuneralhome.com.
