Airport Manager Nick King told the Board of Aviation Commissioners Thursday that the stand down is 2 to 6 p.m. The board previously approved the event.
He said the local barbershop quartet 4 O’Clock Shadow will sing the national anthem. The Warsaw Community High School Junior ROTC will present the colors.
“The Hooligans Flight Team - they’ve been down to Warsaw for a couple other events in the past - volunteered to come down and they’re going to do a flyover for the veterans during the national anthem. Then they’re going to turn around and come back and do a bomb burst before landing, and then they’ll taxi up and get some fuel and head back to” the Chicago area, King said.
He asked the board to approve for the airport to cover the expense of the team’s fuel.
“They’re doing this at no expense to the event. They’re not charging any show fee or anything like that because they’re all veterans themselves and they want to support veterans, and I think it would be a very kind gesture to cover the fuel for them,” he said.
Asked how much, King estimated it would be about 150 gallons, or less than about $600.
Board member Dan Robinson made the motion for the airport to provide the fuel, member Gene Zale seconded it and it was approved 4-0.
The veteran stand down is open to all veterans, service members and their families and caregivers, according to a flyer provided by King. They will have free access to a hot meal, haircut, Veterans Administration services, housing assistance, hygiene items, food and more.
They can register by phone through the Center for Career Connections at 574-267-1656, Warsaw, or 574-977-8050, Plymouth.
For more information, contact Jill Powers at 574-400-5487.
King also told the board that one of his high school interns is working with the airport line supervisor on a flying pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. July 22. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for kids.
The next board meeting is 5:15 p.m. July 11 at City Hall in the Council Chambers.
