Operation Read Car Rally For Reading Show Winners Announced
By Staff Report-
The sun showed up to shine upon the glossed-up and perfected cars on June 10 at 3600 Commerce Drive, Staples Plaza, Warsaw, according to a news release from Operation Read.
A variety of years, colors, makes and models of cars created an artistic canvas draped across the concrete. A veritable heritage of history, ingenuity, fortitude and possibly luck is encapsulated in each car’s story.
Best in Show winner Denny England’s yellow 1932 Ford Deuce Coupe is a cultural icon, creating its own iconic story, stated the release. Upon its introduction in 1932, you could have purchased the Ford Deuce Coupe for under $500. On the heels of the Great Depression, this amount would have been a considerable amount to pay. The Deuce Coupe is a car that Henry Ford and his son, Edsel, were able to collaborate on and the first Ford to include the powerful V8 engine. They named it deuce, which means two, since it was created in ’32 and the coupe because it generally only held two people. The Deuce Coupe pushed a top speed of 78 and it is rumored that even bank robbers John Dillinger and Clyde Barrow owned one.
Judging of the vehicles was competitive and required a pristine ride which was scrutinized, according to the release. Operation Read and the Board appreciates their support of literacy for children and adults.
