The public is invited to an open house and mini expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Titus Funeral Home & Cremation, 8056 E. 500 North, North Webster, to check out the renovations, meet the staff and more.
Benz said on hand Saturday for the mini expo will be a Sue’s Creations, Stillwater Hospice, Allison & Associates Medicare Advisors, Tippecanoe Township trustee and American Legion Post 253. The North Webster-Tippecanoe Chamber of Commerce will open the day’s events with a ribbon-cutting.
Light refreshments will be provided, along with giveaways to local area businesses. No RSVP is acquired. If anyone has any questions, they can call 574-834-1200.
In a tour of the renovated facility Thursday morning, Benz said, “We tried to bring some of the outside elements in, in tranquil colors, more of a peaceful, calming environment and not so funeral ready, not the heavy drapes and the heavy fixtures.”
In a news release, he stated, “The goal of the renovation was to lighten the mood; to make the space more home-like so that the families we work with can focus on fellowship and grieving in a comfortable environment.”
There’s an open coffee lounge in the funeral home for people to bring and share food and drink, and just to step away from the viewing and/or service in the other room. A TV and the internet can be used to keep children distracted if necessary.
The two bathrooms all have new flooring. Countertops and cabinets were still on their way as of Thursday, but otherwise the bathrooms have been redone.
The chapel, which seats about 125-150 people, has been redone with all new furniture and flooring. There’s a large television mounted at the front of the chapel that is WiFi enabled if a family wants to stream YouTube or other videos of their departed loved one. The funeral home also can livestream services.
Benz said they’re trying to stay ahead of the adjustments and people’s wishes, as well as changes in the environment and funeral services.
Titus owns Kosciusko County’s only crematory.
“Having the area’s only crematory, reserved for the families we serve, means that your loved one never leaves our care,” Benz said. “We strive to honor traditional values while bringing needed updates to the funeral process. We just want to give every family every opportunity, a nice facility, and be able to offer whatever they want. We try to adapt with what’s changing and are also very proud of our exclusive Life Celebrations, which you can see snippets of on Saturday.”
The Syracuse funeral home is in the process of receiving a similar renovation like North Webster’s. Benz said they also will probably have an open house for the Syracuse community once it’s ready later in the year.
To date, the Titus Funeral Home in North Webster has had two services since the renovation. Benz said the North Webster funeral home serves about five to 10 families a month, or about 60 to 80 a year.
“We do headstone sales. We do pre-planning funerals. Of course, we have the crematory, which is private to us. And then Life Celebrations, which is a unique way of putting together a nontraditional funeral,” Benz said.
“We try to serve all walks of people, all walks of faiths and age ranges,” he said. The interior renovations of the 5,000-square-foot building are meant to bring the lake feel in, some of that tranquility and comfort, “but really also to bring comfort to anyone who walks through our doors.”
“It’s all fresh and clean and just looks nice,” said Eldonna Warren, who has worked at the funeral home since 2016. “It’s very welcoming.”
She said the colors are lighter and the interior looks “fresh” and “good.”
“We’ve tried to make it more comfortable,” Benz said, and modern with that lake feel.
