Movement Mortgage Presents $10K Grant To Baker Youth Club

At the Baker Youth Club in Warsaw on Thursday, Dobbins, senior loan officer with Movement Mortgage, presented the check for $10,000 from The KM Foundation to BYC Executive Director Tracy Furnivall. Also present for the celebration of the grant were representatives of Movement Mortgage, the BYC and the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce.
“I was very excited that (my nomination) got chosen,” Dobbins said. “I think this is important for Kosciusko County.”
The KM Foundation is a partner of Movement Mortgage and is the appraisal company that Movement Mortgage refers to, she explained. Movement Mortgage is a mortgage company based out of North Carolina. They are located in Warsaw and several other areas in Indiana.
“We are impact lenders, and what that means is we give back to our communities. So every time I close a loan, a portion of those funds will go toward the community. Movement Mortgage donates 49% of their profits back to the communities,” Dobbins explained.
Thirty $10,000 grants are given out every year.
“Every employee is allowed to nominate somebody in their community and I nominated Baker Youth Club and we got chosen for this year,” she said.
The grants are given nationwide.
She said she nominated BYC because she thinks they do so much for the community, especially for the children in the community.
“I feel like it’s important for kids to have a safe environment to go to, where they can gain knowledge and feel safe, to go to during the summer and the school year,” Dobbins said.
There is no specific designation that the grant dollars have to be used for by BYC, she said.
Furnivall said the $10,000 was a “nice chunk of money” that will be used in many different ways.
“Our needs are transportation, staffing, meals, everything that we do to help keep the kids safe and secure here. So, $10,000 will really help a lot,” he said.
He just found out about the money a couple weeks ago so no finalized plans have been made for the donation, but it will help with the day-to-day operations.
“But, we did just get a new bus from the school system that is going to need painted and wrapped. I’m entertaining using some of the funds to help cover that cost. And mainly just whatever our needs may be when those come up. It’s money that we weren’t counting on, so to me that’s useable in ways that we didn’t know when a need comes up,” he said.
The $10,000 will be very helpful, he stated.
During the last school year, BYC countywide had about 475 kids registered. Furnivall said they averaged in the before-school program over 100 kids every day in the morning; and in the after-school program at Wawasee Middle School, Syracuse Elementary School and Warsaw, about 180 to 200 kids a day.
“So, close to 300 kids daily during the school year,” he said. “And right now, as we’re gearing up for our summer camp, we have over 200 kids registered. We’re anticipating that number to go over 300, and we’re looking at averaging about 120-130 a day during the summer camp.”
Along with that many kids, Furnivall said they’ve got to have staff and feed them.
“We serve breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack. The lunch is provided by the school system through a state grant, so the cost of a breakfast and afternoon snack is on us. All of the dinners that we do during the school year - about five or six of those are donated by outside groups, but we’re serving 16 meals a month, so we’ve got about 10 meals a month that we’re trying to cover, so the cost is there and that’s why this money is going to be super helpful,” he said.
The money is a sign of the great community that we live in, he said.
“Shelley Dobbins has been a longtime friend of mine, and her attending some of our events and seeing the impact we have I think is what geared her toward us. The effort she put in, in applying for this grant, this was all done by her and we’re just blessed to be able to receive it, so we’re just very thankful for her, Movement Mortgage and what they do and the communities they’re involved in, and then just blessed to live in Warsaw community,” Furnivall concluded.
