Starting July 31, Lowery Sewing and Vacuum Center, 707 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw, will celebrate its 75th anniversary with a weeklong celebration.
Owner Adam Harman said Lowery was started in 1948 by his great-grandfather, Arthur Lowery, in his garage. Then Lowery was located in a couple storefronts selling sewing machines and vacuum cleaners.
Lowery was located at a couple different places downtown, one of which burned down in 1967. The store has been at its Winona Avenue location since 1978.
Harman is the fourth-generation owner, but fifth owner. Lowery Sewing and Vacuum Center was owned by his great-grandfather, grandfather, father and brother before him.
Lowery now sells vacuums, sewing machines and sewing supplies.
Harman said the reason he thinks Lowery is still around is because they take care of their customers. Some of the ways he said store staff helps customers is allowing customers to try out vacuums at home to see if they work, instead of having customers take one off the shelf and hope they work like they would at a big box store.
Staff also help customers find the right sewing machine for them, and, after the sale, they get as many free lessons as the customer needs, which is included in the price of the machine. During the lessons, staff will sit down with customers and go over anything the customer wants to go over.
Harman said there are staff that have been at the store for decades so they bring that learned knowledge to their service.
During the anniversary celebration, Lowery wants to thank the customers.
Events during the 75th anniversary week are:
• July 31, volunteer sew day for Ryan’s Case for Smiles
• Aug. 1, Notions party with Checker Distributions
• Aug. 2, volunteer sew day for Project Linus, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Aug. 2, late night open sew from 4 p.m. to midnight
• Aug. 3, open sew continued until noon
• Aug. 3, Schoolhouse Day with seminars at 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m.
• Aug. 4-5, fabric sale with ice cream
Hours for Lowery are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
