Churubusco at Manchester
Manchester boys’ basketball continued a white hot run with their fourth win in a row Tuesday night with a 95-37 victory over Churubusco at home. The Squires are now 11-2 this season.
Gavin Betten scored 28 points to lead the way once again for Manchester. The sophomore is averaging just over 21 points a game this year. Tyler McLain went for 21 points and Ethan Hendrix had 15 to round out the top scorers.
The Squires host Rochester on Friday and will look to remain undefeated (3-0) in the Three Rivers Conference.
Bremen at Triton
Triton picked up a win in the opening round of the TCU Bi-County Tournament Tuesday, defeating Bremen 43-42 at the Trojan Trench. The Trojans are now 7-4 this winter.
Triton battled back from a slow start, trailing 19-4 after the first quarter. A big second half in which the Trojans outscored the visitors 30-19 proved to be the difference. Cole Shively had 19 points and seven rebounds, while Julian Swanson added eight points. Dante Workman led the team in assists with seven.
Triton faced off with New Prairie in the second round of the tournament Wednesday night. Results to come in tomorrow’s paper.
Girls Basketball
Peru at Tippecanoe Valley
Tippecanoe Valley remains undefeated in Three Rivers Conference play and clinched at least a share of their second straight conference title with a 62-42 victory over Peru at Rita Price-Simpson Court Tuesday night. The Lady Vikings are now 16-3, 7-0 in the TRC.
Three Tippy Valley scorers finished in double figures, led by Kaydence Mellott with 15. Molly Moriarty scored 14 and Macy Petersen added 10. The Lady Vikings travel to Southwood Saturday and can clinch the conference outright with a win.
Lakeland Christian at Fort Wayne Canterbury
Lakeland Christian earned a hard-fought win on the road Tuesday night, defeating Fort Wayne Canterbury 39-30. The Cougars are now 12-5 this season.
Hanna Stout and Reece Stonebreaker each scored nine for LCA. The Cougars are back in action Tuesday when the team hosts Whitko for Senior Night.
Wrestling
Warsaw at Tipton
The Tiger Wresting team made a trip to Tipton on Tuesday night for a late-season matchup heading into sectionals.
Warsaw jumped out to a big lead early and came home with a 59-18 victory.
Jaxson Walters got things started for Warsaw with a first period pin at 182 pounds.
After a string of Tipton forfeits, Drake Shilling kept the momentum rolling with an impressive shutout tech-fall at 113.
Elias Garza wore out his opponent as he earned a pinfall in the third period at 120.
With Warsaw up 41-0, Tipton got on the scoreboard with wins in the next three weights.
The Tigers responded in kind, racking up pins in each of the next three matches.
At 145, Grant Cook came out on top of a scramble and secured a first period pin.
Danny Moon at 152 and Bryson Brown at 160 both worked multiple scores in the first period before putting the match away early in the second.
Tipton picked up a win in the final bout of the evening, but were only able to put a dent in the final score.
Warsaw won three of four jv matches prior to the varsity action.
KC Smith, Mariana Castro, and Brody Duncan were all winners by pin in the first period.
Warsaw’s record is now 16-4 with one dual remaining. The Tigers will host Fort Wayne Northside on Thursday night. Prior to the scheduled 6:45 start, the team will honor its class of 2023 wrestlers and parents.
Swimming
Culver Academy at Warsaw
The Warsaw boys swim team beat Culver Academy in the Tiger Pool 128-57 Tuesday.
It was a record-setting night for Sr. Ian Wihebrink, who broke the school record in the 100 freestyle race with a time of :47.15. The old record was :47.26 set by Mitchell Gauger in 2011.
Wihebrink almost broke broke a second record missing the 50 freestyle race record by :00.01 with a time of :21.51. That record was set by Steve Lowrance in 2005.
The Lady Tigers also won over Culver Aca. 98-88.
