3 Seeking Harrison Township Board Seat

January 12, 2023 at 10:21 p.m.

Three men have filed for the seat on the Harrison Township Board of Trustees following the Dec. 31 resignation of Gerald Weirick.

Ronald Buhr filed Tuesday, Ed Rock and Keith Franks filed Thursday.

The Republican caucus is set for 6 p.m. Jan. 19 in the Mentone Council Chambers, 105 E. Main St., Mentone, for precinct committeemen to elect the next Board member.

Buhr, 62, said he knows the current trustee and when he saw the November election ballot there were only two candidates for three seats. When he saw the Times-Union story last week about the opening on the Harrison Township Board, he decided to go for it. Recently retired from Maple Leaf Farms in May, Buhr said he finally has the time on his hands to do some good and help the community.

He worked in the purchasing department for 31 years for Maple Leaf Farms, which took a lot of time and energy. Now that he has some of that time back, he’d like to give back.

Being in the purchasing department at Maple Leaf, he said he knows about budgets and spending money wisely.

While he grew up in Fort Wayne, he has lived in Kosciusko County for 38 years.

Rock, 67, is retiring as the Kosciusko County Emergency Management Agency director March 30.

He said he is seeking the Harrison Township Board position because he has some history with the town of Mentone and he used to be on the Board.

“I’m looking to keep my fingers in how government works in our county,” Rock said.

He also said that he wants to be able to say that he was involved in the community.

“I have been a precinct committeeman for many, many years,” Rock said, and he is very interested in looking after taxpayers’ dollars and making good decisions for the township and helping the township trustee make good decisions.

Rock said he has a lot of experience in budgets and that’s a piece of the job as a Township Board member.

Franks declined to comment.

Candidates must reside in Harrison Township, Kosciusko County, and be a Republican in good standing.

Declarations of candidacy are available at the office of the Kosciusko County Clerk of the Circuit Court, 121 N. Lake St., Warsaw, and must be filed with Ragan no later than 72 hours prior to the start of the caucus. The deadline is 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Eligible candidates will be allowed a maximum of 3 minutes to address the voting caucus. The Harrison Township Board member will be elected by secret ballot of the majority of the voting caucus to fill the vacancy.

Eligible members of the caucus are the Republican precinct committee members who have served continuously from 30 days prior to the date of the start of the caucus.
