He was born on May 19, 1936, in Nappanee, to John O. and Eva Johnston Pippenger. John Jr. lived his entire life in the Nappanee and Milford area. On Jan. 15, 1955, he married Joan Loucks in Nappanee and they lived for the last 50+ years in their family home in Milford.
John worked as a young man at Coppes Kitchens in Nappanee before working for many years in the manufacturing housing and RV industry. He worked for Heckamen Homes and Phoenix Travel Trailers, among other businesses, before retiring from Damon Corporation in 2000. John enjoyed harness racing and was active as a racer at Nappanee Raceway Park for many years. He also loved John Deere tractors and collected toy tractors and other John Deere memorabilia. He especially enjoyed working outdoors, gardening and mowing on his John Deere mower.
John is survived by his wife of almost 68 years, Joan Pippenger, of Milford; two children: Steve (Kitty) Pippenger, of Milford; and Nancy (Rick) Teater, of Cedar Park, Texas; four grandchildren: Jennifer (Kelly) Prater, of Claypool; Carlie Pippenger, of Milford; Tiffany (Adam) Treadway, of Cedar Park, Texas; and John-Michael Teater, of Lufkin, Texas; three stepgrandchildren: Denise (Richard) McManis, of Etna Green; Dennis Tillotson, of Washington state; and Father Kris Teater, of St. Louis, Mo.; and two great-grandchildren: Kylie and Wyatt Prater. John was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael Lee Pippenger; a sister, Dorothy Mae Spencer; and a brother, Robert Devon Pippenger.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13 and from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14 at Thompson-Lengacher and Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and burial will follow at Island Chapel Cemetery, Milford.
