With no violations, all five alcohol license renewals before the Kosciusko County Alcohol Tobacco Commission on Thursday were approved for another year.

Two of those were for Oakwood Resort LLC.

Oakwood Resort LLC, doing business as Oakwood Resort Event Center, 849 E. Lake View Road, Syracuse, had its beer, wine and liquor catering hall license approved.

Oakwood Resort LLC, doing business as Oakwood Resort - Hilltop Conference Center, 1111 Conklin Hills Drive, Syracuse, also had its beer, wine and liquor catering hall license extended for another year.

Excise officer April Tackett explained, “Just so you know, there’s actually - you’ve got the Oakwood Event Center, then you have the Oakwood Hilltop, then you have the Oakwood Hotel. Even though it’s all their same property, because it’s different buildings, that’s why they have so many permits. Because they couldn’t have like a blanketed alcohol permit over the property since it’s individual places.”

She said Oakwood used to have all the alcohol at the hotel and then they would cater to their separate buildings.

“But what you have to do when you cater is, the day of the catering event, you bring the alcohol. The day that the catering is over, you take it back. So instead of doing all of that work, they decided to have three (licenses),” Tackett said.

Board member Dan Woods asked if that used up three licenses for the town of Syracuse. Tackett said she didn’t think Oakwood was within the corporate limits of Syracuse and was in the county.

“But, the two are catering hall permits, so I don’t think those are on quota anyway, even if they were in the city,” she said.

When contacted, a person at Oakwood Resort said they are in the town limits. The county website also has Oakwood listed as being in Syracuse.

The other three permits renewed Thursday included:

• BPOE Elks 802, doing business as BPOE #802, 310 E. Center St., Warsaw, beer, wine and liquor, fraternal club.

• Clouse Enterprises Inc., doing business as Down Under, 801 N. Huntington St., Syracuse, beer, wine and liquor, restaurant.

 • Side House Grill Inc., doing business as Side House Grill, 2604 Shelden Drive, Warsaw, beer, wine and liquor, restaurant.

In one last piece of business, the Commission elected Elim Smith to continue to serve as president for 2023. The other board members are Tackett, Alan Alderfer and Dan Woods.
