Oakwood Cemetery May Get Five-Year Plan

Sexton Hal Heagy told the Oakwood Cemetery Board of Regents Thursday that Mayor Joe Thallemer asked Heagy to meet with city engineer Aaron Ott to possibly do a five-year plan for the cemetery. If the cemetery does a five-year plan, Heagy said maybe the cemetery can update water lines in the north and south sections of the cemetery. Heagy said replacing the water lines is a huge project and the five-year plan will be the first step to see how much it would cost.
Once Heagy and Ott meet, Heagy said he will bring any possible five-year plan to the board.
Heagy said his immediate plans, which he discussed during January’s meeting, are to run a new line from Sheridan Street to the chapel and office. He wants to put a couple hydrants and a filling station on that line so people can use water from the filling station in other parts of the cemetery in order to water flowers and other purposes. Heagy said he doesn’t know if the work will get done this year.
Leaks in the cemetery’s water lines have been a topic of discussion for several months. Heagy said about 85% of the cemetery was without water for most of the summer due to the leaks.
In other business, the board learned:
• The cemetery gave away five loads of wood in January.
• The chapel garage was cleaned and painted.
• Security cameras were installed at the cemetery’s office. Heagy said he is thinking of possibly putting a camera at the cemetery gates as well.
• Learned a ceremony will be held at the cemetery for Memorial Day.
Ceremonies will also be looked at for Juneteenth at the Civil War Circle, Aug. 10 for Agent Orange and Veterans Day.
