“Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Indiana,” said Randy Christophel, Goshen Health president and chief executive officer. “We encourage everyone to show your heart a little love and take steps toward a healthy lifestyle that can reduce risk for developing the disease.”
Maintaining a healthy weight and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels can reduce the risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases.
“Living healthy begins with making heart-healthy choices,” said Blair MacPhail, MD, interventional cardiologist at Goshen Heart & Vascular Center. “A healthy diet, regular exercise and not smoking can prevent 90% of cases of heart disease.”
High blood pressure is often called the silent killer because it has no warning signs or symptoms. Nearly half of adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure. It is the leading cause of stroke and heart disease.
Regular blood pressure tests are the only way to know if the level is in a normal range, around 120/80 mm Hg.
Healthcare providers typically check blood pressure at every appointment. Many pharmacies provide free blood pressure measurement machines. Home-based blood pressure monitors offer an easy way to regularly monitor blood pressure.
Goshen Heart & Vascular Center offers free educational resources and videos about heart-healthy lifestyles on its website, GoshenHeartAndVascular.org. Goshen Health also highlights heart and vascular health at webinars and events throughout the year.
