Two people have filed for Clay Township trustee, a paraprofessional and a consultant.
The position became vacant as current Trustee Jacob Metzger resigned, effective Dec. 31. Candidates for the Republican caucus Wednesday are Stephanie Stutzman and Spencer Barlett.

    Stephanie Stutzman

Stephanie Stutzman grew up on a small farm outside of Claypool and is now raising her children on a farm outside of Claypool. She works at Claypool Elementary School as a paraprofessional working with special needs students and used to work as a corrections officer in Elkhart County.
Her husband, Tommy, is the assistant fire chief at the Claypool Fire Department. Stephanie and Tommy also own Stutzman Roofing and Masonry.
She said she is a big advocate for the rural community. She wants to ensure any issue that comes up in the township is addressed, with a priority going to first responders and to make Claypool look presentable.
This is the first elected position Stephanie has sought. She said if elected, she hopes to bring new insight to the position and she wants to help build up the community and township.

    Spencer Bartlett

Bartlett moved to Kosciusko County in 2003. He started his family and his career as a software and technology consultant in the county.
Bartlett said this is the first elected official he has sought. He said he loves the country and the Constitution and he is a firm believer in local government.
Bartlett said, in his position as a consultant, there is a lot of bookkeeping and record keeping that will help him in the trustee position. He also said the fire department has helped in two fires for his family and appreciates the help the fire department gave. He would love to give back to the fire department.
If elected to the position, he said he thinks he will bring a good partnership with other township offices and residents. There is a lot of communication he does with his job and he could use that skill as trustee.
A caucus has been called for Wednesday. The Clay Township trustee will be elected by secret ballot of the majority of members of the voting caucus to fill the vacancy in the office.
