SILVER LAKE — Silver Lake Town Council received and tabled three bids to improve the roads using the Community Crossings Matching Grant at its meeting on Wednesday.
The three bids were from Burt's Construction for $240,317.27, Phend and Brown for $180,580 and Gaunt and Son for $189,649.50.
At the advice of Mitch Hansel, USI Consultant, the council decided to table the offers until the next meeting. The council also signed and approved a financial commitment letter for another Community Crossings grant in 2024 for Sycamore Street.
The council also approved the fire department's request to allocate $5,000 more to the fund for a new fire truck. The reason for this increase was due to the previous owners of the firetruck installing a new light tower on the truck. The firetruck is expected to arrive roughly around May or June. The previous agreement stated the town would pay $65,000 with the township paying the other half. The approval of the extra $5,000 brings the town's total contribution to $70,000.
The council also approved Town Marshal Jason McGlennon to pursue leads online looking into different cameras. The marshal's department also gave an update on being able to purchase one of the flock cameras due to a $4,000 donation they had received, and will soon be installed downtown.
McGlennon also asked the council and was approved to consider signing up for the Pawn Shop Report, which would cost approximately $1,800 annually and give his department access to follow leads of stolen items through a website of pawn shops all across the United States.
In other business, the council:
• Accepted the multi-step plan going forward for the Americans with Disabilities Act.
• Accepted the water and sewer budget for fiscal year 2024.
The town also read and approved a new ordinance protecting the public water systems from contamination involving back-flow from private water systems.
• Accepted a Deadly Force Policy, which states: "A law enforcement officer is justified in using deadly force if the officer has probable cause to believe that deadly force is necessary to prevent serious bodily injury to the officer or a third person or the commission of a forcible felony."
• Approved and renewed their contract for 2024 with Parkview Emergency Medical Service.
The year-end meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Dec. 27 at the town hall. The next regular meeting will be Jan. 10.
