NORTH MANCHESTER – Manchester University's Spartan Pride Marching Band has made the finals for Metallica's inaugural marching band competition, judged by members of the heavy metal band themselves.
The competition challenged marching bands at all levels to craft the most exciting, unique and impressive performances of Metallica's music, according to a news release from Manchester University.
Led by Director of Bands and Music Education Scott Humphries, the Spartan Pride Marching Band is one of just five Division 2 and 3 collegiate bands to make the finals.
Metallica will select the winners of each category, which will be announced the week of Jan. 1. Prizes for the Division 2 and 3 college winner will include $40,000 and musical equipment for the program, furnished by Metallica and the competition's sponsors.
"We are so pleased to be a finalist in the competition," said Humphries. "We are the youngest band involved, and it's a testament to the hard work of our students and staff that we have made it to finals. This is truly a team effort."
Bands are also competing for the title of Fan Favorite, which is voted by the public. Watch submissions and cast your vote at metallicamarchingband.com or text #UMANCHESTER to 833-609-0330.
