Editor, Times-Union:
Every state has great benefits for the military and veteran families. Some states have better benefits than other states. For example, New Mexico has a program designed for military veterans to work in movies or TV. Alabama has a program for spouses and their children eligible veterans to have 10 semesters of undergraduate education and $1,000 per semester for books and fees.
Indiana military and veterans families benefits include state income taxes, property taxes, education and tuition assistance, vehicle plates, hunting/fishing licenses, and state park privileges for eligible veterans.
There are benefits for Indiana National Guard and the Reserve service members, when college is not option, apprenticeships or on-the-job training (OJT) may apply using the GI Bill. Indiana has over 800 jobs eligible for apprenticeships. Examples: electrician, plumber, iron worker or tool and die maker.
Even Indiana Gold Star family members have benefits.
Mr. McDowell, our county veterans service officer (CVSO), can explain and help you to apply for veterans’ benefits under federal, state and local laws. All these services are provided free of charge.
