Defense, Smythe’s Leg Help Tiger Football Get To 2-0
August 25, 2023 at 11:20 p.m.
For the second straight season, the Warsaw Tigers football team played its Week 2 game against Chesterton. Unlike last year’s 24-7 win however, the Tigers had to battle a bit harder to come away with a victory. The unorthodox score on the scoreboard means little to Warsaw fans, as their team is now 2-0 after an 8-6 road victory on Friday night.
For the second straight game, the Warsaw offense was blanked in the first quarter. Despite not scoring the game’s only touchdown, the defensive minded Tigers held strong for most of the game, allowing the offense to do what was necessary to finish off the victory.
Warsaw began the scoring midway through the third quarter. With Chesterton backed up to its own one-yard line, the Tiger front was able to get a big push, getting a tackle in the end zone for a safety.
After the home side scored a touchdown with nine and half minutes left in the game to go up 6-2, the Tigers never blinked. With just under five minutes left, Mason Smythe hit a 26-yard field goal to trim the deficit to just one. With just 25 seconds left on the clock, Smythe would come up clutch again, hitting a 38-yard attempt to put his team on top for good.
Once again, the Tigers were money on the ground, running for all 265 yards the team accumulated. Defensively, the run defense was just as good, with Warsaw allowing just 23 yards on 23 carries. Chesterton did most of its damage in the air, throwing for 166 yards to bring the total to 189.
Despite picking up its second win in a row to start the year, Warsaw is sure to lose some sleep after another three fumble game. Luckily for the Tigers though, Chesterton was unable to score off of any. Warsaw played a very clean and composed game, committing just one penalty for five yards.
With the win, Warsaw begins the season 2-0 for the second straight year, and for the fourth time since 2018.
Head coach Bart Curtis moves to just one win behind Bill Goshert for third all-time in wins at Warsaw, and now has the 31st most in Indiana football history.
The Tigers play their third of three straight road games to start off the season next Friday night when the team heads to Plymouth to take on the Pilgrims in their first Northern Lakes Conference game.
