Each of the Lady Tigers five wins came in straight sets, the first coming from No. 2 singles player Abby Nicholas, who defeated Wawasee’s MacKenzie Hackleman 6-1, 6-0 in just over 45 minutes.
“She went out there, played tough and came out on top,” Warsaw head coach Stacy Lind said after the match. “She can be a really dominant player.”
Not long afterwards, the No. 2 doubles pairing of Claire Reichenbach and Lucy Ray secured a 6-0, 6-0 victory to put the Lady Tigers up 2-0 on the scoreboard. The duo has seen a plethora of success this season, especially this week. It was the second Warsaw victory in a row in which the pairing won both sets without losing a game.
Lilia Gustafson served as the Lady Tigers’ No. 3 singles player at Wawasee Thursday, replacing Emma Van Puffelan, who was sidelined with a minor injury. Gustafson more than made her mark as a replacement, winning 6-1, 6-2 to give the Lady Tigers their third victory in as many tries, securing the match.
The No. 1 doubles pairing of Avery Landwerlen and Clara Porter started off slowly, allowing the Wawasee duo of Allison Clark and Kenley Stewart to take an early lead in both sets one and two. Landwerlen and Porter kept battling though, eventually taking both to secure the team’s fourth win of the day, 6-4, 6-3.
The duel between Warsaw’s No. 1 singles player Addie Lind and Wawasee’s Kiah Farrington started off one-sided, with Lind dominating the first set and taking a 6-0 win. The second was much more competitive, with Farrington coming back from an early 3-0 deficit to get within one at 5-4. Lind would finish the job though, and take the second set 6-4 to finish off the sweep.
“Addie started off strong, really played well in the first set and did what she needed to do,” Lind said. “Kiah picked it up a little bit and the second and really forced her to dig deep to finish it off.”
The Lady Tigers wrap up a busy week with their fifth game in as many days Friday evening at Fort Wayne Concordia.
“It can be a grueling schedule for not just the athletes but the parents who come to support them,” Lind said. “For us to come here today and walk away with this big win is wonderful.”
