Student’s Job Title: Job Shadow
Supervisor: Michael Lyons, doctor of podiatric medicine.
What are your job responsibilities: Follow around doctor, ask questions, assist nurses.
How has this position been helpful to you? I found out I want to be a physician/surgeon.
What have you learned? All about the way a doctor’s office works and about how surgeries go in the operating room.
How is this job preparing you for the future? I get to have real experiences with a doctor and his patients.
What do you like about this job? Hanging out with the nurses.
What Career Center classes have you taken in your pathway? Anatomy, Human Body Systems, Biomedical Interventions, AP Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Medical Terminology and Microbiology.
Your Career and College Plans: To become a podiatrist.
Supervisor Input:
What duties does this student perform? She helps the assistants with injection draws, retrieving instruments/materials and at times some patient care.
How is this job preparing this student for the future? She is getting experience in the medical field. i.e. patient interaction, familiarity with instrumentation/materials and interaction with other providers within the office.
What do you think of the WACC Work-Based Learning program? I think this is a great opportunity for students to get experience that can be relevant to their future endeavors. In addition it may show them that what they think they want to do may turn out to be something they don't enjoy.
Why were you willing to partner with the WACC in this program? I enjoy allowing any students to come into the office for experience that may them help in their future. We have had many students - medical students, college students, MA students, nursing students and now high school in the office.
