Heather James Responds To 3 Questions For Winona Lake Clerk-Treasurer Race

By David L. Slone-

With the May primary a week away, both Republican candidates for Winona Lake clerk-treasurer were asked to respond to three questions.

Following are the responses given by Heather James, current Winona Lake Town Councilwoman.

1. What expertise and skills do you possess that make you the most qualified person for the job?

My bachelor degree is in health science from Ball State University and, although not a related field, I have work experience with budgets, managing accounts and customer service. My work background, council experience, along with my personal strengths of good communication, organization and being detail oriented make me a qualified and competent candidate who would bring respect and trust to the office.

2. What are some of the things the town clerk-treasurer is responsible for and how much experience do you have in handling those things?

The clerk-treasurer is responsible for accurately managing and reporting the town’s finances. The office supports the town council by providing them with the reports and information needed so they can make informed decisions. The clerk-treasurer also supports the department heads by providing them with financial reports and other requested documents.  The clerk-treasurer is also responsible for making sure employees are paid on time and receive accurate paychecks.

Having been a town council member since 2017, I am experienced in reviewing the reports and making responsible decisions. My work experience includes, maintaining accurate accounts and information and meeting deadlines on time.

3. If elected, what would be your goals for the clerk-treasurer’s office for the next four years and how would you like to accomplish those goals?

If elected, my goals for the clerk-treasurer’s office would be to create a positive environment with structure, transparency, and clear communication. To promote transparency and share relevant information with the residents, I would like to create a newsletter to be distributed on a regular basis. I will work to build strong relationships with the town departments and continue working with the council to maintain the reputation of Winona Lake.

These goals can be accomplished by building a team of qualified employees and ensuring the entire staff receives relevant job training. I will also make sure the staff is cross trained.
