Manchester, which boasts both quality upper and lower classmen players, was led once again by their freshman singles players. No. 2 Myla Crozier and No. 3 Bethany Penrod each looked flat out dominant in stretches of their matches, with each competitor winning their match 6-0, 6-0.
“I’ve got 12 players that could be varsity players for me in any given year, which speaks to how deep we are. Practices can get intense,” Manchester head coach Joel Eichenauer said after the match concluded. “My freshmen have been a delight. They’re playing hard, playing with instinct. They’re trusting themselves and going out and getting it.”
The doubles matches went almost as smoothly for Manchester Wednesday night, as No. 1 pairing Delani Henderson and Carliegh Blevins won their match 6-1, 6-1, while the No. 2 duo of Addison Brubaker and Hailey Krom won 6-1, 6-0.
“We’ve got one doubles team (No. 1) that is really coming together and gelling nicely. When you have players with as much experience as them, it can come easy,” Eichenauer said. “Our other doubles pairing is so athletic and can cause so many problems for opponents, it’s been a treat to watch.
The match of the night came from the No. 1 singles pairing of Manchester’s Sarah Kerlin and Wawasee’s Kiah Farrington. Despite only lasting two sets before Farrington earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory, the match was a back-and-forth affair that lasted just over two hours, with both competitors giving it their all as the lead changed hands more than a few times.
Eichenauer says that the success his team has had so far this season has been well deserved.
“They just work so hard in the offseason. The program has gotten so strong over the years with the support that we’ve gotten from our community,” Eichenauer said. “We haven’t had just one stand out class. Every year we produce talent and this year we’ve all bought in and have a really talented group once again. More players are playing in the offseason than ever before. We take pride in what we do here and are proud of how we do it.”
Wawasee hosts the Super Duels Saturday morning at 10 a.m., while Manchester, already with three wins this week, will head to the Canterbury Invitational Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
“I’m looking to see how we look against some really talented teams,” Eichenauer said. “We want to see what we do well and maybe not so much. It’s another opportunity to play this awesome game and I’m looking forward to it.”
