Parents: Shane Roe and Cara Metzger
Employer: Dalton Corporation
Student’s Job Title: Engineering Intern
Supervisor: Matt Miller, manager of plant engineering
What are your job responsibilities: I am responsible for designing human machine interface programs to replace older versions. I also design parts to specification for machine shops or stores.
How has this position been helpful to you? This job has been helpful for me because it has allowed me to gain a better proficiency at Inventor, which is a fairly ubiquitous software in the engineering space. It also has opened the opportunity to learn at my own pace and pursue certification in this and other software.
What have you learned? I have learned a lot about the gray iron casting process and how a mechanical or electrical engineer's work fits into daily operation; they are responsible for keeping the machines running alongside maintenance crews. I have also learned a lot about laying out technical drawings. I have learned how to work with assemblies of multiple parts in Inventor as opposed to single part files. I have also learned how to use the FactoryTalk software to make new programs.
How is this job preparing you for the future? This job is preparing me for the future by showing me what a day in the life of an engineer looks like. While it is not in the specific field that I wish to pursue, mechanical engineering is adjacent and shares many commonalities with the aerospace field. It has helped me form an expectation of the kinds of subjects that I will need to emphasize in college.
What do you like about this job? I like the freedom that I have in my job. I work at my own pace and am able to dedicate time to finding solutions to problems that I encounter. It has helped me expand my ability to use my resources and search the web. It is a practical application of software that allows me to learn as I work.
What Career Center classes have you taken in your pathway? Introduction to Engineering and Design, Principles of Engineering, Digital Electronics and Engineering Design and Development.
Your Career and College Plans: Aerospace Engineering major or Mechanical Engineering major with a minor in Aerospace Engineering
Supervisor Input:
How is this job preparing this student for the future? It is preparing the student to problem solve and develop practical solutions to those problems.
What do you think of the WACC Work-Based Learning program? It is a great opportunity for the student to work in their profession prior to making a larger financial and time commitment in building the education for that profession. This program also will give the student on-the-job experience, which will be helpful in their class work and toward being hired for other positions.
Why were you willing to partner with the WACC in this program? To work with the school systems and be able to mentor a student interested in the engineering field.
