McCune, Milford Deputyy Marshal, Dies At 53

He suffered an off-duty medical episode on Friday, Sept. 23, according to a Facebook post by the KCSO.
McCune recently served as a deputy marshal for the Milford Police Department, starting in July 2021.
Before serving with Milford, McCune served with the Elkhart and Kosciusko sheriff’s offices, according to a Milford Police Department Facebook post.
He served more than 30 years in law enforcement, the KCSO Facebook post states. He attended the 119th session of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 1994.
During his time in law enforcement, he performed multiple roles, including SWAT operations, detective investigations, dive team operations, drug task force investigations and more. He also taught criminal justice classes at Whitko Career Academy.
In 2021, McCune was one of four candidates for the Kosciusko County Council District 1 seat after Councilman Doug Heinisch resigned. The Republican caucus chose Kimberly Cates in June.
In a May 31, 2021, telephone interview, McCune said he decided to seek the Council seat not because the Council was doing a bad job, but to help the county be more financially responsible and conservative.
He said he has lived in Kosciusko County his whole adult life. In 1992, he interned with the KCSO and was hired that year at the jail. He worked his way up to road patrol, retiring in September 2019.
He had an associates degree in criminal justice from Indiana University.
McCune loved spending time with his family and friends. His daughter, Sadie, was born while he was attending ILEA and he was always a “proud and devoted father and grandfather,” the KCSO post states.
Don and his wife Dawna enjoyed spending time going on adventures when possible.
The Milford Police Facebook post states, “Don was, and will always remain, a vital piece of the Milford Police Department family, and a legend in the law enforcement community.”
