WINONA LAKE - Over 500 supporters gathered Monday for the 26th annual Legacy of Life Banquet for Right to Life of North Central Indiana.

The event took place at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center on the campus of Grace College & Seminary in Winona Lake.

Dr. Drew Flamm, president of Grace College & Seminary, was emcee for the event. Numerous local and state politicians were in attendance and a statement on behalf of Congressman Jim Banks was read by Landon Porter, district deputy director.

Jeff Allen, board president of Right to Life of North Central Indiana, along with family members of Mary Louise Lowe, announced the recipients of the Mary Louise Lowe Pro-Life

Award. This award is given each year to individuals, organizations or businesses that have in some way impacted the pro-life movement in North Central Indiana.

This year’s recipients were Carole Jaroch for volunteering over many years and the late Congresswoman Jackie Walorski, accepted by her husband Dean Swihart.

Indiana Right to Life President and CEO Mike Fichter reported on the current political climate in Indiana regarding pro-life laws and the state’s financial initiatives to further support mothers and the unborn.

Dave Koontz, executive director of Right to Life of North Central Indiana, highlighted accomplishments made by the organization, including promoting the Safe Haven Hotline phone number and partnering with Lakeland Christian Academy to take over 60 students to the National March for Life in Washington, D.C.

Among other accomplishments reported were the organization’s presence at county fairs and the Blueberry Festival, support for pregnancy resource centers, as well as promoting pro-life messages through billboards and radio.

The keynote speaker was Brooke Martin, an Emmy- winning anchor and former reporter for WISH TV. Shortly after announcing her second pregnancy on air, Martin and her husband received a fatal fetal diagnosis for their daughter, Emma Noelle. For eight months, Martin carried their daughter while publicly walking through grief and ultimately loss. Martin is now working to show others how life’s fires have the ability to bring new growth, greater beauty and everlasting hope, according to a news release from Right to Life.

The evening resulted in donations and pledges totaling over $114,000. The funds will be used to further pro-life efforts in North Central Indiana.

Koontz stated, “The annual banquet is always a great opportunity for area pro-lifers to gather, celebrate life and raise the funds needed to continue efforts to support pregnant mothers and save lives (born and unborn).”
