Tippy Valley Comes Back From 2-0 To Stun Triton

BOURBON – It looked to be a quick and painless victory for Triton volleyball Thursday night, with the Trojans up two sets to none and winning both fairly easily. But Tippecanoe Valley had different plans, coming back to win the next three sets to shock the home team and travel back to Akron with a 3-2 (8-25, 23-25, 25-20, 28-26, 15-13) victory. The Lady Vikings are now 5-5, while Triton falls to 8-2 after having their seven-game win streak broken.

Triton came out on fire in the first set. The Trojans scored the first six points of the match, forcing a quick timeout from Valley head coach Ashley Derf. It wouldn’t do much, as Triton would keep the pressure on and start the game with a 10-0 lead. Junior Addyson Viers of Triton was a Swiss Army Knife in the first game, racking up kills, blocks and even a couple of aces.

The lead would get up to 18-3, and while the Lady Vikings would go on a run to make it a little more respectable, Triton took the first set in dominating fashion with a 25-28 score line.

Tippy Valley would counter the momentum to jump out to a 5-1 lead in the second set, but Triton would answer earlier this time, tying the set at 7-7. The Lady Vikings’ Erika Henderon was very busy in the back row, keeping dozens of Trojan kills from reaching the hardwood.

The second set is where the two teams would start trading points a lot more frequently. The two sides would share deadlocks at 21, 22 and 23 points, but three straight points by Triton would earn them the second set 25-23.

With their backs against the walls, the Lady Vikings would start out strong again in set three. Tippy Valley would get their lead up to 20-10 before Triton started mounting a comeback. The Trojans would get the margin down to two at 22-20, but the Lady Vikings would hold on for a wire-to-wire 25-20 victory in set three.

The fourth set was the set of the match. Triton would go up 4-0. Tippecanoe Valley would tie it up at 4-4. The Lady Vikings would find a little bit of breathing room, about five points worth, until the end of the set. Trailing 24-19, the Trojans would rattle off five straight points to tie the game at 24. Needing to win by two, both teams would trade points until an unforced error by Triton would give Valley the 28-26 victory to tie the match at 2-2.

Unforced errors became the theme of the final three sets for Triton. Despite that, the Trojans would take a 7-1 lead in the fifth set before a huge run by Tippy Valley to take the lead at 8-7. The Lady Vikings would finish off the comeback and win the set 15-13 and match 3-2.

Tippy Valley will stay on the road for its next game Monday against Columbia City, while Triton hosts a tournament Saturday.
