By Staff Report-

You probably know that heart disease is a major health threat, but are you aware that stroke is a similarly powerful threat to your brain?

According to the American Stroke Association, stroke is the number five cause of death in this country, and a leading cause of disability.

The Parkview Warsaw team – recently awarded The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® and the American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark for Acute Stroke Ready Certification – wants you to know that most strokes are preventable. It’s also important to know what your personal risk factors are so you can take steps to safeguard your health. The Parkview Warsaw Center for Healthy Living will provide a chance for you to learn more at a free event on Nov. 16, according to a news release from Parkview Health.

“STROKE: Know Your Risks and Recognize the Warning Signs” will help you understand your personal risk factors. The free community event will take place at the Parkview Warsaw Center for Healthy Living, located in the Parkview Warsaw YMCA, 1305 Mariners Drive, on Nov. 16. Area residents can stop by between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. or between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Representatives from Parkview’s stroke program will be available to provide blood pressure checks and personal stroke risk assessments.

In addition to understanding your potential risk for stroke, you’ll learn how to recognize stroke symptoms so you’ll know when to seek medical assistance should you or someone close to you experience a stroke.

The acronym “BEFAST” provides a simple tool to help you remember common stroke symptoms. BEFAST stands for balance issues, eye/visual problems, face droop, arm weakness, speech slurred and time. Time is included as a reminder that during a stroke, every minute counts when it comes to getting emergency care.

Registration is not required for this drop-in event.

For questions, call 260-266-6500 or 844-835-0003.
