A benefit for a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office deputy’s wife, who is battling cancer, is set for Nov. 5.

Chief Deputy Shane Bucher told the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Merit Board Wednesday that Katie Hochstetler was diagnosed with stage 4 cervical cancer. She is married to deputy Andrew Hochstetler.

She began a second round of chemotherapy over the summer, according to information provided at the Board meeting.

A tailgate-themed fundraiser party and raffle drawing and live auction will be at 6 p.m. Nov. 5 at The Owl’s Nest, 7369 E. CR 800N, North Webster. It is being organized by the Fraternal Order of Police #149 with the KCSO.

The grand prize for the raffle is a pontoon boat and second place is $25,000. There are 3,000 tickets. Bucher said he believed people could buy one ticket for $40 or three for $100.

Bucher said it would mean a lot to support the Hochstetler family.

Tax-deductible donations can be made to FOP Lodge #149, P.O. Box 832, Warsaw, IN 46581. In the memo line, put Huddle Up. Venmo payments can be made to @FOP149 under the business name. Under what’s it for, put Huddle Up.

In other business, Sgt. James Marshall said KCSO is in the middle of a field training. On Sunday, Oct. 9, he said there were 30-plus officers during training from the county, as well as outside the county. On Sunday, Oct. 15, there will be part two of the field training.

Part of field training is a  rescue task force training. That is a combination of firefighters, paramedics and law enforcement working together in case of mass casualty or active casualty  situation.

Marshall said, in the past, procedure is paramedics and medical help have waited outside while the building is cleared before help is given to those who need it.

“We’ve learned that is not good practice,” Marshall said.  While people are injured and needing help, medical help is waiting outside.

Now there is procedure being developed where law enforcement goes in “with fire or EMS” in what is called a warm zone to investigate if people have been injured before the building has been secured.

Also, the Board:

• Learned the Kosciusko County Jail has 247 inmates with two waiting to be transported to the Department of Corrections.

• Learned there is a Jail Chemical Addiction Program (JCAP) graduation at 1 p.m. Nov. 10. There are eight men that are on pace to graduate from the program.

• Learned there are 70 people that “are out with Work Release.”

• Learned new radios were put into deputy vehicles. KCSO realized the programming wasn’t right and the programming should have been fixed by the end of Wednesday.

• Will look into how pension benefits and beneficiaries work, especially when it comes to a single parent, in an effort to make sure children of deputies are taken care of.

• Learned KCSO was given a grant of 600 helmets for the department to distribute to second-graders.

On Friday, 50 helmets were distributed to Milford Elementary School.
