Columbia City at Warsaw
The Warsaw Tigers boys basketball team started off its 2022-23 campaign with a win on Saturday, moving to 1-0 with a 67-55 victory over Columbia City at the Tiger Den.
Senior Drew Heckaman tied a career high in points with 24 points. Luke Bricker added 15 points and Jackson Gould contributed 13. The Tigers outscored Columbia City 37-24 over the second and third quarter to pull away for good.
Warsaw has a road game Friday at Homestead.
Tippecanoe Valley at LaVille
Tippecanoe Valley earned its first win of the season Saturday, defeating LaVille 40-30 on the road to improve to 1-1 after a loss on Wednesday to Mishawaka.
Nolan Cumberland led the way for the Vikings by putting up 18 shots and eight rebounds. Riley Shepherd made two three-pointers and finished his night with 10. Tippecanoe Valley hosts Argos in its first home game of the year Tuesday.
Manchester at Oak Hill
Manchester was on the losing end of its season opener at Oak Hill Saturday, falling 68-43.
Despite the loss, it was a fantastic game for Squires’ sophomore Gavin Betten. Betten finished with 20 points, eleven rebounds and three blocks. Ethan Hendrix was second on the team in scoring with seven points.
Manchester will look for its first win of the season Tuesday against Lakewood Park Christian in the Squires’ home opener.
Whitko at Heritage
Whitko dropped a close contest to Hertiage Saturday, falling 54-49 on the road. The Wildcats are now 0-2 this season.
Kyler Krull had a great game in the defeat, scoring 23 points, grabbing 4 rebounds and getting two assists. Brent Bowers had nine points, second on the team. Whitko travels to Decatur to face off against Bellmont Friday.
Girls Basketball
Manchester at Oak Hill
Manchester picked up its second win in a row Saturday, defeating Oak Hill 48-36. The Lady Squires are now 3-4 this winter.
Brookelynn Buzzard continued a strong start to the season by scoring 20 points. Maddy Miller also reached double figures, scoring 13 while leading the team with five rebounds. Manchester will look to extend its winning streak to three against Lewis Cass Thursday.
Wrestling
Warsaw at Wawasee Duels
The Warsaw Tiger wrestling team got their first action of the 22-23 season at the Wawasee Duals on Saturday. The Tigers took second place in the 6-team field with a 4-1 record overall.
Warsaw started the morning strong with a 72-6 win against Fort Wayne South Side. In the dual, the Tigers picked up 8 wins by pinfall and surrendered just one loss.
Round two paired Warsaw with the hosts and NLC rival, Wawasee. While many matches went the distance and battled in tight bouts, Warsaw was only able to pick up three wins in the dual and fell 18-61.
The Tigers bounced back in round three and generated momentum that pushed them into a strong finish. Facing a South Bend Washington team battling some injuries, Warsaw again took a 72-6 win on the strength of 4 pins and a collection of forfeits.
Warsaw had two wrestlers go undefeated during the tournament. At 126 pounds, Isaiah Martinez earned two pins on his path to 5-0. Gideon Castro was also 5-0 in the heavyweight division. Castro grabbed two wins by pin and also picked up a major decision along the way.
The Tigers will enter one of their toughest stretches of the schedule next week; hosting Mishawaka on Tuesday, traveling to Goshen on Thursday, and hosting the Hutch Memorial Duals on Saturday.
