On Nov. 23, 2022, it gives peace to know that dad’s memories are back, he can hear, his leg is healed, and he is doing the two-step with mom once again. In the last year, as I asked dad more questions about his life growing up, some stories seemed a little “stretched.” “I was the best softball player in the whole dang county.” “I played music since I was four.” “I didn’t back the tractor into the pole building!” “I met your mom at the roller-rink and she couldn’t skate worth a damn!” When I asked him if any of his friends were alive to collaborate his stories, he stopped, thought, and said, “Hell no!” So, this tribute to his life is his version.

Jake was born to Lillie Snyder and Harvey Elliott on Oct. 31, 1923 (which explains his orneriness). At 99, he was preceded in death by many of his family and friends; brother (Gene), sister-in-law (Gertrude), nephew (Paul), son-in-law (Mark McKrill), and in April 2021, his wife Barbara of 75…yes, 75 years!! He is survived by his daughter, Sara McKrill, Huntertown, and his granddaughter, Morgan, Indianapolis.

He graduated from Tippecanoe High School. He played basketball and centerfield softball for the Mentone All Stars.

In World War II, he was in the U.S. Navy Air Corp (he always made sure to clarify) stationed in Jacksonville, Fla. He worked in the radio tower providing radio alert for German subs.

After the war, Jake came back home to the family farm. Then one special night at the roller-skating rink, he fell in love with Barbara Morgan. They were married in 1948. Side-by-side they worked on the farm with livestock and growing crops. They were married 18 years before the birth of their daughter, Sara. (He said it “took a lot of practice”!) After being married for 50 years, Jake and Barbara were even more excited for their granddaughter Morgan to arrive. She was grandpa’s girl!

Jake played music (guitar, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, piano) all his life. For 40 years, he played for many weddings and square dances with the Pete Freehauf band. Many lifelong friends were made over a “do-si-do.” He also entertained people at the Bourbon Senior Center. He held many positions on the Marshall County Planning Commission and the BZA board. He went on an Honor Flight and encouraged any veteran to take the opportunity to go. He recently was honored as a 75-year member of the American Legion Post 424 in Bourbon.

Visitation will be on Friday, Dec. 2, 2022, from noon until 2 p.m. at Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St. Bourbon, IN 46504. Service will be on Friday at 2 p.m. Following the service, burial will be at Tippecanoe with military honors by the Bourbon American Legion. Memorial contributions can be made to American Legion Post 424 of Bourbon or Promedica Hospice care.

Thank you to all our friends and community for your support during this difficult time. Condolences may be left at deatonclemensfh.com.

Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home is honored to be assisting with the celebration of Jake’s life and wish to thank him for his service to our country.
