A Warsaw man is facing multiple charges after allegedly stabbing a man and hiding out in a vacant residence.

John Edward Robinson, 48, of 303 W. Winona Ave., Warsaw, is charged with residential entry, a Level 6 felony; criminal mischief, a Class B misdemeanor; battery, a Class A misdemeanor; and battery with a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony.

He was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 9:25 Nov. 8 on a $5,250 preliminary bond.

According to the first probable cause affidavit, on Nov. 7, a Warsaw Police Department officer responded to a report of a man who was stabbed in the lobby in the Kosciusko County Justice Building. The main entered the Justice Building and informed security staff he had been stabbed. The man received medical treatment for a stab wound to his back.

The man said he was stabbed by Robinson while at McDonald’s on North Detroit Street in Warsaw.

A Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office deputy talked with a woman who witnessed Robinson stab the man. She said the altercation came from her having a relationship with both men. The woman said she told the man she was at McDonald’s and needed transportation. When the man arrived in the parking lot, Robinson exited the restaurant and approached the vehicle, striking the side window.

The woman said the man got out of the vehicle and got into an altercation with Robinson. She said Robinson threw a punch that hit the man in the side. Initially, she said she thought the man was punched and not stabbed. Once the two got to the Justice Building, the man told her, “He got me.” The officer observed both wet and dried blood on the driver’s seat of the vehicle operated by the man.

Video footage retrieved from McDonald’s showed the physical altercation. In the video, according to the affidavit, Robinson is seen grabbing or attempting to hit the man. Robinson is then seen walking away from the vehicle yelling at the man. Robinson then allegedly approached the vehicle again and the man exited the vehicle. Robinson allegedly reached for something behind his back and stabbed the man.

According to a second probable cause affidavit, on Nov. 8, a WPD officer received a report of the location of a stabbing subject, later identified as Robinson.

The officer arrived at the scene and spoke to a neighbor who said the residence was vacant at the time. The officer checked the residence, seeing items scatted throughout the residence, but it appeared vacant. The officer found the back door open and signs of forced entry could bee seen on the front door. Law enforcement went into the residence believing it was broken into.

Officers found Robinson hiding in the closet next to the front door, according to the second affidavit. During a search prior to arrest, Robinson allegedly had three knives and a cell phone on him or in his property that was believed to be used during the stabbing.

An officer spoke with a man who said he owned the property and has been having problems with people breaking into the residence, which required the property owner to secure the residence several times. The property owner said no one had permission to be living in the residence at the time of the incident.

Robinson was previously convicted of aggravated battery, a Class B felony, in the Lake County Court System on July 27, 1994. He was convicted of battery resulting in bodily injury in the Kosciusko County Court System on Jan. 29, 2021.
