Squires’ Lincoln Leads The Way Among Area Athletes In Goshen Regional

The Squires scored 39.5 team points to finish a distant third to regional team champion Penn (97.5), and runner-up Mishawaka (44). The Warsaw Tigers finished seventh (34), and the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings finished eleventh (25).
Dawson Perkins was the area’s lone field event champion clearing 6’6” in the high jump earning him a return trip to Bloomington Saturday June 4.
Lincoln’s winning times of 14.94 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles, and 39.03 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles made him one of only two of the meet’s double event winners. Teammates Ethan Cummins, A.J. Fortman, and Cade Jones will join him on the Indiana University campus next weekend thanks to a convincing win by 2.83 seconds in the 1600-meter relay (3:25.55).
The meet’s runner-up in the four-lapper was the Warsaw Tigers, whose team of Morgan Johnson, Andrew Frush, Colton Martin, and Jeremy Johnson completed the four-lapper in 3:28.38.
Jeremy Johnson will also see action in Bloomington running the open 400 meters thanks to his second place finish in 50.28 ticks. Johnson broke the 50-second barrier one week ago, but this week Maconaquah freshman Aiden Kelly accomplished that feat (49.62 sec.) for the regional crown.
Valley’s Wade Melanson punched his ticket to the state meet with a shot put throw of 54’0.5” finishing third.
Other notable area schools’ performances included Manchester and Valley in the 400-meter relay. Each quartet broke the 44-second mark.
The Vikings placed fourth in 43.51 seconds with the efforts of Caleb Petgen, Perkins, Rex Kirchenstien, and Wade Jones. Jones, a sophomore who is already streaking toward an area record for career football interceptions, also broke the 23-second barrier in the 200-meter dash (22.52 sec.), but his fifth-place finish will keep him home next weekend.
The Squires 400-meter relay team of Cummins, Fortman, Braxton Ream, and Seth Gaerte completed a single lap in 43.77 seconds.
Warsaw’s Noah’s shot put distance of 51’7” landed him in fourth place. He’ll keep the ringer volume up on his phone in case a scratch among other state qualifiers opens the door for his berth in Bloomington. Morgan Johnson’s pole vault height of 13 feet remains the best in the Times-Union area, but it landed him short of a state berth with a fifth place finish.
State qualifiers in the regional meet include the top three finishers in each event, and individuals finishing beyond third place, but meeting the state’s Standard 3 participation times, heights, or distances among the 16 events.
