Work On Preacher’s Stand Underway At Oakwood Cemetery

By Jackie Gorski-

Work to the Preacher’s Stand is underway, according to Oakwood Sexton Hal Heagy Thursday.

Heagy told the Cemetery Board of Regents he did some work to the stairs. Previously, the stairs were crumbling and moving. It was suggested a sidewalk be put out to lead to the Preacher’s Stand, but Heagy said he decided against it at this time.

The gutter also has been fixed.

Heagy presented the Board with an estimate for $2,467 to do the rest of the work, which included putting a ceiling in, putting new doors in the back, repainting and block work.

Heagy said cemetery staff will get to the rest of the work needed to repair the Peacher’s Stand sometime after May.

Board President Ken Locke said the new steps look really good.

Also, Heagy told the Board someone would like to put a stacking two-tier mausoleum in the cemetery. The mausoleum will take up four lots. The person is interested in buying six lots to put the mausoleum in. The person doesn’t want to put the mausoleum where the two crypts are now and wants the mausoleum to be “out in the cemetery.”

Heagy said he’s never done this before while sexton. There are some mausoleums in the older sections, but none in the newer sections.

Heagy said he doesn’t have a big concern about the mausoleum.

Board member Max Mock asked if the mausoleum was going to block the view of another stone. Heagy said not head on, but it will at an angle.

Heagy said at the next meeting, he’ll bring the Board a picture of what is wanted.

Mock said he didn’t have a problem with it, the cemetery just needs to make sure it doesn’t block any other stones.

The decision was tabled until the next meeting.

In other business, the Board:

• Learned the cemetery gave out eight loads of wood.

The wood is given away to those who need it. People are able to get vouchers from Combined Community Services for the wood. The cemetery gives a truckload of wood a month to heat homes.

• Was reminded the Memorial Day ceremony will be at 11 a.m. May 30 at the Preacher’s Stand.
