Spherion Offers Light Industrial, Professional Employment Services

Spherion Staffing & Recruiting is a light industrial and professional placement full-service agency.

On Wednesday, the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting for Spherion at their office at 620 N. Detroit St., Warsaw.

Marty Pentenburg, Spherion Staffing & Recruiting market area manager for the Fort Wayne, Warsaw and Decatur markets,  said they offer employment services “whether you need one person, 200 people or more.”

For example, he said, take a company like Zimmer Biomet. “They’re going to call us and say, ‘Hey, we need some help at one of our warehouses.’ Whether that’s 50 people, 100 people, they’ll call us and we’ll be the solution provider for them.”

Spherion is a national franchise. The local market includes Fort Wayne, Warsaw and Decatur, with Fort Wayne opening in 2009, he said. A few years after that, the Decatur office was opened once an account was secured.

“That fed our business for a long time in the area. We came to Warsaw in January of 2021, and we have two current employees in this market,” Pentenburg said. “We have a lot of opportunity right now, specifically in Columbia City, but as we alluded to earlier, there’s a lot of orthopedic - obviously, you guys know that here in Warsaw - so that’s kind of a niche market we’re trying to break into. But we also have several other local clients in the area right now.”

If a person with any skill set is looking for a job, Spherion can help them, too.

“If it’s somebody who has a very specific skill set, whether you’re some type of machine operator or an accountant, doesn’t really matter we have a broad range of openings. If we don’t have an opening at the time, we can source for you, or sometimes we have clients who have a very specific need - trying to find a needle in the haystack - so, when we get those people who have that specific background, we can get them placed with that client,” Pentenburg explained.

Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Spherion also has a 24/7 texting app, and in the coming months Spherion’s corporate team is releasing a ChatBot on the Spherion website so the company can be open 24/7 that way. “They’re going to be able to match people with positions that way. Or you can call us, text us, email us,” he said.

Spherion also has partnerships with Indeed, Monster, Zip Recruiter and some aspects of Facebook.

Before the COVID pandemic, Pentenburg said a lot of clients had very specific requirements, whether that was job experience, criminal background or education requirement.

“As it went from an employers’ market to an employees’ market, employers loosened those standards, so maybe somebody called us five years ago, maybe they had something in their background” so they didn’t qualify for an employer five years ago, he said. Now, Spherion could take that same person to an employer and that person could potentially qualify for that job now. “Pretty much anybody that comes to us, we have something for you. Obviously, there’s a few things we can not work with, but our success rate - pretty much anybody who applies with us, we can help you find something.”

Currently, Pentenburg said the area where employers need workers most is in the light industrial realm.

“The companies who have the CNC operators, the punch press operators, those people are vested in those positions. They’re pretty well taken care of. They have a specific skill set that not a lot of companies really need, so those people stay where they’re at. But, a lot of the, I would say your big box warehouses where people are just - they’re packaging, they’re moving pallets or they’re sorting product, putting price tags on items for stores - those are really the teams that are needing the most people right now. Along with a very specific division that is in need right now, across the country, is forklift drivers. It’s happening to us all over the state,” he said.

Spherion prides itself on being local, Pentenburg stated. “If people call us and they have a major problem, we want to be the solution. They can call us in a pinch, and as quickly as we can, get their staff up to their need to help alleviate their issues they’re having on their end, and create that partnership.”

He concluded by stating that Spherion is growing.

“We’re growing, both out in the field with our clients and we’re always taking applicants. So if you know anybody or have a family member or friend, feel free to bring them to us. We always have referral programs and we’re always hiring internally,” he said.
