The name on the new formal wear business at 1804 E. Center St., Warsaw, isn’t for the people who own it, but for a couple the owner wanted to honor.

Jim and Darlene Formal LLC is owned and operated by Michael Skipper.

“It’s named after my aunt and uncle who had an amazing influence in my life and always reached out to me growing up,” Skipper said.

Jim was Skipper’s best man at his wedding in Kansas.

“So that’s why it’s named after Jim and Darlene,” Skipper said. Jim died about four years ago, but Skipper wanted to do something to honor them.

As of Wednesday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce, Skipper said Darlene didn’t know about the business name, yet, but he was going to send her some pictures.

As for what the business offers, Skipper said, “Formal, to me, is kind of more of a broad term,” and includes tuxedos, prom and wedding dresses. The bulk of what he has in stock are prom and wedding dresses. “I have like 843 prom dresses. I don’t even have them all in yet, I still have to get them out,” he said.

Upstairs, he will have a bridal section with about 200 wedding dresses.

A business in Kentucky closed its doors, Skipper said, and through a friend of his he purchased the entire store’s formal wear and shipped it to Warsaw.

Jim and Darlene Formal LLC is slated to begin operations April 8 by appointment only. If it gets a good response, Skipper said he would hire two or three people to run the store as it’s probably a seasonal business.

Generally, he said most hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, by appointment only as he works his full-time job at night. He does live only five minutes away from the business.

Skipper said he looked all around for a place for his business and waited three months for the building on Center Street to come open.

“I probably looked at 10 different places. This came open and I love the location here,” he said. “I love the community here. I’ve been here over 20 years now. It’s just a nice community.”
