WCS Chess Teams Place In Top 10 At State Finals

Warsaw Community Schools announced WCS teams placed in the top 10 of their divisions at the 2022 SCI Team Chess Indiana State Finals on Saturday.

Hosted at Morton High School, Hammond, teams played in groups of four students and competed in four rounds of chess.

In the third grade and under division, Washington STEM A-team placed sixth out of 20. Congratulations to Fareed Sultan Mohammed, Ezra Burden, Aarav Jena and Aadhya Rajesh.

Washington STEM B-team placed eighth out of 20. Congratulations to Josiah Burden, Elizabeth Macke, Jake Finley and Seth James.

Edgewood Middle School, seventh and eighth grade, sent two teams to the competition. The A-team placed second out of 13. Congratulations to Ashlan Oliver, Carson Devanathan, Makayla Riley and Jaya Dharmapuri. The B-team placed ninth out of 13. Congratulations to Josh Carpenter, Grace Landon and Owen Meerzo.

The Warsaw Community High School team placed eighth out of 19. Congratulations to Nate Anderson, Aiden Carr, McKale Hagg and Keegan Besson.

WCS thanks Warsaw Education Foundation for their financial support through a Red Apple Grant.

WCS would also like to thank the chess coaches. The coach for Washington is Jay Bolduc. The coach for Edgewood is Sam Wysong with parent-volunteer coach Mel Oliver. The coach for WCHS is Olivia Patton.
