A Warsaw man is facing several charges after allegedly attempting to steal a car with a child in the back seat.

Duane E. Mangum II, 37, of 441 S. Detroit St., Warsaw, is charged with criminal confinement, a Level 5 felony; two counts of theft, Class A misdemeanors; unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, a Class B misdemeanor; and public intoxication, a Class B misdemeanor.

He was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 6:13 a.m. Thursday with a $10,250 preliminary bond.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on Thursday a Warsaw Police Department officer responded to an alleged auto theft at a gas station in Warsaw. Upon arrival, the officer spoke to a woman who said she had parked her 2004 Pontiac Sunfire at the gas pump. While the car was still running, she entered the gas station. The woman’s child was seated in the back seat of the car while the vehicle was parked.

While inside the gas station, the woman looked outside and saw her vehicle was no longer parked outside. The woman exited the store and saw her vehicle in the parking lot next to the gas station. As the woman ran to her vehicle, the vehicle was backing up across the grass between the properties, striking a metal pole, coming to a stop before reaching the gas station parking lot.

The woman observed a man, later identified as Mangum, exit the vehicle, speak with her and leave the area on Lake Street. According to court documents, the vehicle sustained minor damage.

The woman described Mangum as wearing a gray hoodie and a black/gray sock cap. According to court documents, the officer recognized the cap from a man he had dealt with on a trespassing complaint at a hotel shortly before the vehicle incident.

While attempting to locate Mangum, the officer saw a man walking on West Lake Street wearing a gray hoodie, carrying several packages that appeared to be still sealed from shipping. He was also wearing a backpack.

The officer made contact with Mangum and, according to court documents, could detect alcohol coming from Mangum. Mangum’s speech was allegedly slurred.

Mangum was taken into custody and read his Miranda rights. Mangum refused to speak with police.

The packages Mangum was carrying were for a Warsaw resident. The officer spoke to the person the packages were addressed to who said the packages were in her truck and were her property. The packages included lightbulbs, lights and a speaker that had a total value of $684. According to court documents, Mangum didn’t have permission to possess the packages.

Mangum is currently under a suspended sentence under Kosciusko County Superior Court II. He was convicted of resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor, on March 26.
