AKRON – The Tippecanoe Valley School Board were updated about the high school’s building project Thursday by representatives from construction management company The Skillman Corporation.

The bid date is still scheduled for April 12, said Scott Rogers, project manager with the Skillman Corporation. There will be a prebid meeting for contractors to come to the high school and become familiar with the site at 10 a.m. Tuesday. If contractors can’t make Tuesday’s meeting, contractors are free to reach out to The Skillman Corporation.

Bids will be opened April 12 and the Board will award contracts on April 18. Construction will start late April and is planned to be finished in August 2023.

Rogers said the company already met with the fire chief in Mentone to discuss egress points to make certain doors that are going to be in that construction area have safe access pad, as well as other safety issues. There will be also a temporary door for the locker rooms during the football season.

Board President Tom Bauters asked in order to keep students safe, will be there be the same kind of security to temporary entrances during the construction.

Scott Cherry, senior vice president with The Skillman Corporation, said background checks are required for contractors and a badge system will be put in place.

Rogers said there will temporarily stripe directional arrows and lane lines in the parking lot so parents know which way to be routed during the construction.

Over the summer, there’s going to be some utilities that are going to be cut and patched, but the plan is to have all the utilities around the building rerouted around the addition, he said. That will be done during the summer before the school year begins.
