Lady Lancers Find Defensive Groove In 68-54 Win Over CIU

In the previous night’s defeat, Grace struggled with allowing open looks and easy shots at the rim. From the opening tip of the consolation bracket’s first round, the Lady Lancers looked like a different team. The home team was tipping passes, blocking shots and forcing ten second violations with a smothering pressure. The victim of a 7-0 run to open the game the night prior, Grace flipped the script by starting the afternoon’s action by going up 9-2.
Coming off of a 14-point second half on Thursday, center Karlee Feldman picked up right where she left off. The junior started the game to the tune of eight first quarter points on her way to scoring a game high 18 points to go with three steals and a block. For Columbia International, the Rams were able to sink a good clip of their threes in the first period, but not at a high enough clip.
Great defense and timely shooting allowed the Lady Lancers to extend their lead even further in the second quarter, getting it up to as many as 20. Feldman continued to roll, and got some help from sophomore Kenzie McMahon. McMahon frustrated Rams defenders all afternoon long, cutting to the paint for easy looks, and getting fouled and going to the stripe when they didn’t fall. McMahon finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Grace went into halftime up 39-22.
With the game’s decision well out of question for the entirety of the second half, the Lady Lancers were able to give some bench players some run. Ten of Grace’s 14 players scored a bucket in the game. Freshman and Warsaw native Kensie Ryman came in to score five points. Her older sister, leading scorer Maddie Ryman, finished with eight. The team’s third leading scorer, Kiersten Poor, shook off a slow performance in the previous game to score 10.
With the victory, Grace is now 20-15, and will play in the fifth place game Friday night at 7 p.m.
