Board Votes To Keep Preacher’s Stand At Oakwood

The Preacher’s Stand will remain at Oakwood Cemetery after the Board of Regents Thursday voted to save it.

The vote came after sexton Hal Heagy recommended the cemetery keep the Preacher’s Stand.

In December, the Board approved to remove the Preacher’s Stand. In January, the Board approved a motion to reconsider the issue and table a decision.

Heagy said Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer received some phone calls about the Preacher’s Stand after the December vote and Thallemer asked Heagy to come to one of the Warsaw Common Council meetings in December. Thallemer asked Heagy to take a look at the Preacher’s Stand decision again with the amount of people that responded to the decision.

Thursday, Heagy said he started on the process of repairing the Preacher’s Stand. He said, from a structural point of view, he doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with it; it just needs some repairs.

“The money was never the issue,” Heagy said, noting he just wanted to know where to spend the money.

He said he’s not talking a lot of money to make the repairs. It was about the age and what repairs to do. He estimated the repairs would cost no more than $4,000. He said he could do most of the repairs himself.

The money will come out of the cemetery’s permanent account, which is not tax based, so the money would not come out of tax dollars. Heagy said he hopes to get the Board a better quote of the costs by the April 6 meeting.

Boardwoman Ellen Hoffer asked what repairs are planned on being made to the Preacher’s Stand.

Heagy said he put a new metal roof on the Preacher’s Stand in 2015. A tree landed on the corner of the roof. It didn’t damage the roof, but did damage the gutter. The gutter will have to be repaired.

Heagy is going to put a ceiling in the Preacher’s Stand. He talked about putting a white aluminum ceiling inside.

On the back, there are two doors that were damaged after someone broke in and the doors will have to be replaced.

The front step of the Preacher’s Stand is pulling away. He thinks staff can frame the step and pour more cement over it. He might also redo the entire front and extend it a bit.

There are also wooden seats that Heagy plans to  replace.

Heagy noted the Preacher’s Stand is an icon of the cemetery, but it’s in a bad spot. He said he wished it was in a better spot so it could be utilized more.

In other business, the Board:

• Learned the security system at the cemetery shop is working well.

• Voted for Ken Locke to be president and Ellen Hoffer to be secretary of the Board during 2022.

• Heard Heagy is waiting on quotes for material to put in water lines in the eastern section of the cemetery. Heagy said the cemetery staff will put in the lines themselves.

• Talked about the flag pole by the Civil War circle. Heagy said he will probably have to move the pole in order to separate it from a nearby tree.

Heagy said he bought new flags that can take a 125-mph wind. One of the new flags will be put on the pole.
