The Warsaw Afghan Help Group is having a Community Collection “Day” this week to help the Afghan refugees in Fort Wayne. The refugees need basic items as they establish new lives in our area. To date, Warsaw has happily and actively stepped up to assist refugees who have been forced to flee their homeland with little to nothing.

Refugees initially stay at the Cabrini Center, a converted retirement facility, until they are able to resettle in permanent housing. As supplies at Cabrini are consumed, resupply is essential. Also, refugees need basic supplies as they transition from Cabrini to establish new homes for themselves.

Toilet paper, paper towels, comforters, pillows, sheets and microwave ovens are the most needed items.

We have established two drop-off locations where anyone in the community may take their donations. Sacred Heart Church at 125 N. Harrison St. is accepting donations through today from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Habitat Resale Store at 3970 Corridor Drive, Warsaw, is accepting donations today and Saturday from 9 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Seven churches are accepting donations from their members this Sunday, March 6. Members of Branches Vineyard Church, First United Methodist Church, Saint Anne’s Church, Sacred Heart Church, Valley Springs Fellowship, Walnut Creek United Methodist Church and Warsaw Community Church can drop their donations off as they attend church this week.

To all in our community: Please consider and then act on making donations as you are able. Please consider encouraging youth to contribute as they are able. A single bar of soap makes a difference to a person who has no soap.

The complete list of needed items includes: brooms, mops, trash bags, dish soap, toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, bar soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, facial tissues, hair ties, brushes, combs, socks, underwear, microwave ovens, rice cookers, pots, pans, glassware, plain twin sheet sets, plain queen sheet sets, twin and queen comforters, pillows, blankets, bath towels, baby crib sheets.

The Cabrini Center requests that donations be new and unopened.

We are grateful for the immense generosity Warsaw has extended to the refugees thus far. That Warsaw is doing this for refugees living 45 miles away speaks volumes of the kindness and benevolence of our community. The need continues.

Questions may be sent to [email protected].

Thank you.
