The Warsaw Afghan Help Group announced that Sunday will be a Community Collection Day for supplies for the Afghan Refugees in Fort Wayne.

As refugees first arrive in Fort Wayne, they live at the Cabrini Center, a remodeled retirement facility. The goal is to provide temporary housing there until permanent housing becomes available. Supplies are needed to restock diminished supplies at the Cabrini Center and to help refugees set up their individual housing as they transition to it, according to a news release from the Help Group.

Brittany Young, supervisor of the Cabrini Center, stated, “We have a complete list of supplies that will help us, but the most needed items from it are toilet paper, paper towels, comforters, pillows, sheets and microwave ovens.”

Brad Durcholz, of the Warsaw Afghan Help Group, said, “The two community drop-off sites for supplies are Sacred Heart Church and our local Habitat ReSale Store.”

Donations to Sacred Heart are accepted now through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Donors should ring the bell if the doors are not open. Sacred Heart Church is at 125 N. Harrison St., Warsaw.

Donations to the Habitat ReSale Store are accepted this Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The ReSale Store is at 3970 Corridor Drive, Warsaw.

Durcholz said, “Seven local churches have agreed to be collection sites for their congregations. Members of these seven congregations are encouraged to drop donations off at their church this Sunday, March 6.”

The churches receiving donations from their members are Branches Vineyard Church, First United Methodist Church, Saint Anne’s Church, Sacred Heart Church, Valley Springs Fellowship, Walnut Creek United Methodist Church and Warsaw Community Church.

New Life Church and Valley Springs Fellowship have made monetary donations for members of the local help group to purchase supplies on behalf of those congregations, the news release states.

Lisa Meadows, of the Warsaw Afghan Help Group, stated, “We encourage the youth of our community to participate in the giving. With items as low-cost as a bar of soap, we feel this is a great opportunity for young people to help those in desperate need.”

All donated supplies will be taken directly to the Cabrini Center next week following Sunday’s collection day.

Warsaw Afghan Help Group member Dick Rooker stated, “Take note of the refugees fleeing Ukraine this week. Most are escaping with very little to no personal possessions. These are the circumstances our new Afghan neighbors have experienced, and it’s why it is so important for us to give.”

Cabrini Center supervisor Brittany Young said, “I love my Warsaw group. They have stepped up in so many ways from helping prepare the Cabrini Center to now helping supply our new friends. I cannot say ‘thank you’ enough.”

Supplies for Afghan refugees needed for Sunday’s target date (brand new items only) include: brooms, mops, trash bags, dish soap, toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, bar soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, deodorant, feminine products, Kleenex, hair ties, brush, comb, socks, underwear, microwaves, rice cookers, pots and pans, glassware, white twin sheet sets, white queen sheet sets, twin and queen comforters, pillows, throw blankets, bath towels and baby crib sheets.

The Cabrini Center prefers donated items to be new and unopened.
