Bernard H. Martin passed away on Feb. 26, 2022, at the age of 90.  

“Bernie” was born on March 21, 1931, to Clyde and Edith Davis Martin. He lived in Howard County his entire life and graduated from Northwestern High School. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Gwendolyn Sue Galloway, for 72 years.

Bernie worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Mason Ford and Med-O-Bloom Dairy before going to General Motors. He worked in plant security in Kokomo for over 27 years, rising to the position of chief. He also worked in personnel for two years before retiring in 1991.

Bernie and Sue enjoyed traveling and visited 49 states, missing only Alaska. They took many trips on their motorcycle and enjoyed riding on their snowmobile. They spent many winters in Fort Meyers, Fla., in their camper and winter home. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was very supportive of his sons’ sports and attended nearly every game.

Bernie is survived by his two sons: Mike (Julie) Martin, of Warsaw; and Nathan (Cindy Shropshire) Martin, of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; four grandchildren: Stacy Martin, Bryan Martin, Melinda Patrick and Jan Brattain; five great-grandchildren; brother, Dale Martin; and sister, Joyce Gilbert.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sue; brothers: Max Martin and Larry Martin; and sisters: Wanda Martin, Carol Martin and Pat Braden.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 3 at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo. Entombment will take place in Sunset Memory Garden Mausoleum. Friends may visit from 1 to 2 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
