MAGA Puritans

The United States of America is not just a Christian nation. It was not founded on Christian principles alone. It was not established for the purpose of promoting leadership by straight white Christian men. The Constitution of the United States of America was written by our founding “fathers” to establish a government of, by, and for the people with a clear understanding and promotion of the rights of the people — freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, and freedom to assemble.
The United States of America is a nation of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and a vast number of other faiths. It is also a nation of atheists and agnostics. It is a nation of diverse ethnic backgrounds, skin colors, and sexual identities. Most of all, it is a nation of citizens who should be free to be whoever they are without condemnation from those citizens who believe they are somehow better or more superior or more entitled than others and thus should force everyone else to be like them.
In recent years a frightening resurgence of a return to somewhat Puritanical beliefs has come alive under the red caps of the folks wanting to Make America Great Again. Judging from the multitude of restrictive, vengeful laws being passed at the speed of light by proponents of this goal and by the rantings of these “cultish” folks pushing for the actual elimination of rights (and even people) they do not like, a return to greatness means the creation of an authoritarian state and the death of our democracy.
It seems the push for this authoritarian state would ultimately mean the forced formation of the “perfect” family — a white, very virile and dominant male leader, a “Stepford” wife who remains silent, pregnant, and obedient, and maybe a couple cookie cutter kids who will eternally be shielded from learning distasteful, embarrassing, and guilt-provoking truths about anything and everything. It would mean that everyone would either accept the religion of the leaders or suffer the consequences or be “sent back to where they came from.” It would mean the end of life as we know it, the end of freedom, the end of the United States of America.
Wake up, people. This is happening. This is not fiction. Pay attention to every candidate running for every office from dog catcher to school board member, to mayor or governor and on up the ladder. Educate yourselves. Vote smart.
(I can’t help but wonder how our country and our lives would be different today if our constitution had been written or at least co-written by founding “mothers”.)
