Oakwood Cemetery is looking to putting in sturdier flag poles in Legion Circle 3 next week, sexton Hal Heagy told the Board of Regents Thursday.

Heagy said the poles can withstand winds up to 125 miles per hour. The previous ones keep bending over, so the new poles will be able to withstand more wind.

Heagy said the cemetery is currently flying five flags at the circle, so they will continue to fly five flags. However, Heagy said the cemetery will probably buy another flag for the Civil War Circle.

In other business, Heagy updated the Board on a request he had on a crypt mausoleum. He brought the topic to the Board during the May meeting.

Heagy said the couple wants to put two crypts in the cemetery and wants to buy six lots to put them on. Two of the lots have already been purchased. Heagy said the crypts will be stacked and will not be side by side. It will not block any stones.

Heagy said he has no problems with the crypts and it should easy to mow around and clean. He said he thinks the crypts will add character to the cemetery.

It will be the first crypts of that style in the cemetery. There are other crypts in the older section of the cemetery, he said.

He said he wanted the Board to be OK with the crypts. There were no objections.

Also, the Board:

• Learned Cremation Garden 3 will expand another 109 lots.

• A fence was fixed after a tree fell and damaged the fence before Memorial Day.

• Heagy was planning on recognizing Art Brown’s service to the Board Thursday. Brown stepped down from the Board due to work committents and Dave Baumgartner was appointed to replace Brown. Heagy said he believes Brown was on the Board for eight years.

Heagy was planning on presenting with a plaque Thursday. However, Brown was unable to attend the meeting, so Heagy said he will take the plaque to Brown.
