In a two-sentence news release Wednesday afternoon, the ISP also says that if anyone has information as a victim or a witness, they are encouraged to contact the ISP Bremen Post Criminal Investigations Division at 574-546-4900.
On May 22, the church’s pastor, John B. Lowe II, at the end of the Sunday church service, confessed to “committing adultery” 20 years prior and said he was stepping down. The woman involved, and her husband, then took to the stage at the church and said it was 27 years ago when she was only a teenager and she had been Lowe’s victim. The whole incident was recorded with a cell phone by a member of the woman’s family and posted online, where it was shared thousands of times and made national news within days, including People, Inside Edition, NBC News and the Washington Post.
The woman said she tried to tell someone but all that was done was cover up. No one ever came to her, no one ever helped her, no one ever got her counseling, she said. She also mentioned a cover-up of a church associate pastor who allegedly molested his own two daughters but was sent away to be a pastor at another church.
Lowe stated he said he committed adultery and that he said it went on for far too long. He also then admitted she was 16 years old when they started having sex and it was wrong.
On May 23, New Life Christian Church & World Outreach released a statement concerning Lowe on the church’s website, including that as of May 23 Lowe tendered his resignation with the church.
On May 29, the church issued a new statement apologizing to the victim, congregation and first-time visitors who witnessed the controversy unfold. The new statement was issued the morning of May 29 during an online service while about 20 protesters stood outside. The church announced it had suspended regular church services for the next three weeks and will instead host in-church membership meetings to help the congregation heal and move forward.
The approximately 20 protesters who stood outside the church on CR 325E were not swayed and thought Lowe should be prosecuted and believe there are more victims of sex abuse connected to the church. Representatives of two groups - Bikers Against Predators and Voices Against Injustice - were part of the protesters.
A criminal complaint filed with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office earlier in May was forwarded to the ISP.
