Jessica Hartman, from Comfort Inn, and Jessica Harmon, from Tru by Hilton, were appointed to the Kosciusko County Convention, Recreation and Visitor Commission by the Kosciusko County Council Tuesday.

County Councilwoman Sue Ann Mitchell said the Council has been talking for some time in trying to find people to fill two positions on the Commission from the hospitality industry as required by Indiana Code 6-9-18. Mitchell said she has been looking for people to fill that requirement.

As far as history, Jo Paczkowski was appointed in 2010 and Tammy Kratzer was appointed in 2015 and both were Council appointments, Mitchell said. With the new appointments, the Council would be able to fulfill the requirements.

Mitchell thanked Paczkowski for serving on the Commission, noting she did serve for a long time. “Please don’t think it goes?unnoticed,” but the change in appointments was to try to fulfill the hospitality industry requirement, she said.

Councilman Ernie Wiggins said they met with Paczkowski and explained what the Council was trying to do. The change in appointments had nothing to do with personalities. He thought the Commission needed someone in the hospitality industry.

Paczkowski said Indiana Code can be interpreted a little bit differently. She doesn’t think it needs three hoteliers on the Commission. She also noted she’s a hard worker.

She also was worried about the Commission’s effectiveness as two officers would be leaving. Looking at that aspect, she asked to be kept on the Commission at least for this year. Paczkowski said Commission Vice President Kathy Ray said Ray would rather have Paczkowski on the Commission than be on it herself.

Ray said she is in the hotel industry and, from what she read in the code, it stated a minimum of two people in the hotel industry needed to be on the Commission. Ray’s concern, like Paczkowski’s, is that two officers will be stepping down. Also, with three people in the hotel industry on the Commission, the dynamics might not be the same, which may or may not be a good thing.

Councilman Mike Long asked what Paczkowski envisioned. Paczkowski said she envisioned staying on the Commission as a voting member and the Council would appoint one new person.

Wiggins said he didn’t think Paczkowski fit the requirements for the Commission the way he interpreted the requirements.

Paczkowski also said not all of the Commission members attend all the meetings and the Commission meets every other month.

Councilwoman Joni Truex asked if the Commission was able to livestream their meetings so members could attend their meeting virtually. Paczkowski said the meetings are livestreamed now.
