Warsaw Hoopsters Enjoy Champions’ Week Energy

The Warsaw Tigers boys’ basketball team just completed Champions’ Week in practice at the Tiger Den Wednesday, followed by a ten-minute game with the Carrol Chargers’ Champions Friday night in Huntertown.

Ben Slabach, Adam Slabach, Kurtney Clair Francis, Maddy Nelson, and Nathan Nette formed the lineup to battle Carrol’s Champions between the end of the junior varsity game last night and the ensuing varsity game at Carroll’s fieldhouse.

The Slabach brothers and Francis are no strangers to the big stage. They also participated in Unified Track & Field as well as regular and postseason action in Unified Flag Football.

The big stage last night was Carroll’s beautiful fieldhouse.

The Carroll Chargers’ athletic department showcases this game in their last home basketball contest each season, but it’s usually an intramural affair. This year, Warsaw’s Champions were the guest opponent, instead, and it added some competitive spirit for the schools’ top-flite basketball cheer blocks: Warsaw’s Orange Crush and Carroll’s Neon Nation.

Warsaw’s featured hardwood quintet didn’t just hit the floor cold Friday night. They collaborated with Coach Matt Moore’s Tigers squad to prepare for Champions’ Week.

Moore and his squad simulated game situations, practiced fundamentals, and added fun with shooting contests, and a 3-2-1 buzzer-beater simulation. The practice was highlighted with a tunnel formed a by the Tigers squad as each of the five hoopsters were introduced as the starting lineup.

“This is one of the most enjoyable practices we have,” Moore remarked. “We take this season so seriously, sometimes we forget this is just a game, and you realize you can have a little fun.

“You can interact with other kids who don’t have that opportunity to be part of school sports every day. There are a lot of smiles, there’s a lot of fun to be had. I think it’s just a good reminder to our guys of what an impact they have on other students.”

Three Warsaw Tiger varsity players, freshman Carson Gould, (his brother) junior Jaxson Gould, and Gould the Elder’s classmate Drew Heckaman were student partners on the Unified Flag Football team this past fall.

“It’s important for our guys to get outside of their little world and serve others. It’s neat to see them smile and pump their fists. It’s fun when Maddy’s hittin’ some shots, and Kurtney’s doin’ some things…  our guys get excited about it.”

Champions’ Week will be a welcome fixture in the future of Warsaw Tiger basketball.
